Planning a developmentally appropriate curriculum

The curriculum is the methods and content to be taught, the curriculum involves making decisions about what will be taught and how it will be taught. For instance, creating goals that are clearly defined and shared by all stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, and families about children's development and learning. Observations may be noted in a shared written or online journal used by all classroom teachers which can be used to document growth and learning also it helps you can share it with the family.  Teachers must develop methods of making quick notes that can later be organized into a more comprehensive system, some ways that teachers find effective notetaking are:

  • Preparing labels with each child's name to carry on a clipboard and fill in as opportunities present.

  • Post a clipboard and pen in every interest area for quick jottings

  • Carry pencils and a pad of sticky notes or file card in your pocket

Every month or two, the teacher reads through the accumulated observations to assess individual needs and progress towards benchmarks. Assessments involve reflection and interpretation. This helps to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses, on behalf of teachers being challenged with planning for groups and individuals, the next step in the planning cycle is to list all the needs identified on an individual summary sheet of each student. For example, individualizing plans help teachers work in a coordinated way, linking their goals and objectives, their assessments of individual children, and their daily and weekly planning. Even caregivers should observe the infants and toddlers note where they are acquiring their abilities that indicate developmental milestones for more information about the assessments Documenting Assessment: Plans and Reports | Fredonia.edu
